Those vigorous youths spent upon demonstrations of daring and heroics through clashing with swords to prove equal to the feat of vanquishing others learned in the Arte of Defense would wisely take heed to the perfection of their own abilities than to entrust to the remedies of the surgeon for the varied wounds delivered by expert blows do fall under the cutting blow, the traumatic blow, and the puncture of vital parts. The means by which the body may be struck in such combat are numerous and do press the surgeon to exercise great skill in rescuing the one whose skill is lacking. Should cutting blows be rendered, these may be addressed better and more kindly by suture than by cauter. Should traumatic blows be rendered, the break of the bones will dictate the best method of setting and dressing. For the puncture of vital parts, little may be done but allow for the grace of God to heal the infirm. Should honor or justice require a man to trade blows with the sword, he would better trust to diligent study than to rescue by the surgeon's hands, and Don Christian de Launey has demonstrated such skill by overcoming his foes in the Wounds Retained Rapier Bear Pit at the Celtic New Year celebration in the Shire of Sunderoak, A.S. XXXVIII.
